Collaborative Searching: Social Searching, Together
نویسنده
چکیده
Information Retrieval (IR) is typically an individual pursuit where an individual searcher will engage with a search system, working alone, until their information need is satisfied. Yet in the real world there are many scenarios, both work-related and related to leisure, entertainment or hobbies, where we want to search as part of a team, maybe even a group of only two people. Collaborative Information Retrieval (CIR) refers to technologies which support collaboration in the retrieval process. In this presentation we will present both synchronous and asynchronous CIR as well as covering remote and colocated search, and the various combinations of these. In our work we are particularly interested in synchronous collaborative IR (SCIR) where a group of users work collectively to address some shared information need. We describe two systems we have developed to demonstrate SCIR, one on a gesture-based tabletop computer and the other on touch-based mobile devices (iPODs). We believe SCIR to be an important kind of social search even though the tools to support this are neither widespread nor reliable and are limited by the technology we currently use. Despite this we expect the importance of SCIR to grow as a consequential fallout of growth in social networks and the trend towards social networks now acting as platforms for applications, like search. Scripting For Collaborative Search Computer-Supported Classroom Activities
Searching online is one of the most powerful resources today’s students have for accessing information. Searching in groups is a daily practice across multiple contexts; however, the tools we use for searching online do not enable collaborative practices and traditional search models consider a single user navigating online in solitary. This paper presents a three level conceptual model, called...
متن کاملEvaluating the Benefits of Social Annotation for Collaborative Search
In this paper we present the results of a user study on the usage of social annotation features – sharing, rating, commenting and tagging – in collaborative search processes. Making use of our resource sharing system, LearnWeb2.0, our participants collaboratively searched for resources on a specific theme. The findings show that there is an imbalance between what users share and what they searc...
متن کاملCollaborative Information Seeking Behavior: Concepts and Theories
Background and Aim: Collaborative information seeking is an interaction among members of a group who purposefully try to access and share joint information. Although collaboration is a key component of information seeking behavior, but most of the studies in this area are focused on individual information seeking behavior and collaborative aspects are considered much less. As a result, there is...

This paper presents a collaborative learning repository that leverages the potential of domain specific social tagging in combination with ontology based classification. It is exemplified in LinkedCourse a learning repository prototype for collaborative development, sharing and reuse of resources. The focus of the paper is on the collaborative semantic annotation and searching for similar resou...
متن کاملApplication of Social Computing to Collaborative Web Search
Recently, e-learning has been paid much attention in the area of education. However, it is difficult for the low-achievement students to find out the key points and keywords while searching online articles. They usually cannot accurately obtain the website information even after searching for large amount of data in the Internet. Meanwhile, these low-achievement students often lack of the relat...
